HINGHAM, Mass. — Authorities are investigating a deadly crash that occurred on a busy Hingham highway Wednesday afternoon.

Hingham Police say they responded to 61 Broad Cove Road (Route 3A) just after 4:00 p.m. for a report of a car crash involving a box truck.

Investigators say the car was driving east on Route 3A when, for reasons still unknown, the car crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic and hit a truck head on. The truck driver attempted to steer right but was unable to avoid the car, according to police.

Responding officers say when they arrived on scene, the driver of the car was still trapped inside and the driver of the truck was standing on the side of the road. Firefighters freed the man from the car and transported him to South Shore Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His identity is not being released at this time.

The truck driver was wearing his seat belt and suffered only minor injuries, according to police. He declined medical transport.

The road was closed for almost 5 hours, and reopened just before 9:00 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation by the Plymouth County DA’s Office and the Hingham Police Department.

No charges or citations have been filed.
